| Why is OMOIYARI necessary for us now? In the Cold War era, all nations were incorporated into the world's polarity structure. Therefore, ethnic or religious conflicts in a given region were harshly suppressed in those days. However, in the era after the breakdown of the Cold War, we have witnessed conflicts and terrorist attacks happening all over the world. Recently, in many cases, conflicts such as ethnic problems transcend borders and the previously accepted world order no longer applies. Also, those conflicts and incidents do not merely exist as military conflict, but often develop into humanitarian problems since they involve a rapid increase in the number of refugees and attacks against civilians. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks that shock the world, there is the valid fear that conflicts between the military forces of development countries and terrorist organizations will grow even more fierce on a global scale. In addiction to such manmade conflicts, a great number of additional challenges -- natural disasters such as tsunami and earthquakes, climate change, breakouts of infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, to name but a few -- are taking place every corner of the world. In order to solve the problems mentioned above, and to help each other, it is necessary for us, as members of a global society, to address issues as a united world front, avoiding taking action unilaterally or selfishly. OMOIYARI means "understanding, respecting and accepting others."
What is OMOIYARI? It is a mind that is succeeded from old in Japan, and is replaced oneself with the standpoint of a high other party of the mind who nobly explains that it remains as a culture, understood each other, accepted, and trusted.
What is the OMOIYARI CAMPAIGN?
It is a movement that acts with "Mind of OMOIYARI" to replace oneself with other party's standpoint and to accept each other when daily life and acting JC and makes the mind known from familiar people to people in all parts of the world.
"OMOIYARI" is a global morality.
When and Where did we start the OMOIYARI CAMPAIGN? Background to the OMOIYARI CAMPAIGN, since 2005 JCI Japan has been promoting its campaign for "global morality," or as it is referred to in Japanese, "OMOIYARI." We make this movement known from Japan to all over the world. In Japan, the EDO period was long and peaceful, and witnessed the blossoming of Japanese culture, on a grand scale. People would try to welcome each other in this sprit treaning others with the utmost kindness, throwing oneself to others, which embodied the values of BUSHIDO. "BUSHIDO," a traditional Japanese code of chivalry also became extremely refined during this period. BUSHIDO was in fact a sophisticated moral code uniquely suited to the culture of Japan at the time. BUSHIDO is to express OMOIYARI for another person in visible form.
How do we make OMOIYARI known to the world? "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committied citizens can transform the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has." As expressed in the words of American anthropologist, Margaret Mead, the actions of the individual can exert a profound influence on the world, helping to move things in a positive direction. Each of us needs to become a force for change in the world. We should make use of our vast JCI network to promote OMOIYARI. The ideas embodied by OMOIYARI can be implemented within your existing and future NOM/LOM projects, and in this way this kind of thinking can take root in society.
As a JCI member The members of JCI share a common philosophy regardless of where they are in the world. During our 20s and 30s at the heights of our power, we take action to make a difference in the world, and our actions do influence global society.
Promoting OMOIYARI at the JCI and NOM levels is important, however, we would like to focus on the LOM level and among private businesses, so that our campaign can take root effectively among local communities around the world.
